Emerson (1887). Where there had formerly been a deep, conical central pit in Halemaumau, the bottom had become bodily elevated to form a large, cone-like heap of loose lava blocks. Molten lava was visible in small wells and in a small lake within Halemaumau pit. This reference follows Emerson, 1887, and is followed by Dodge, 1887.
