AB Brigham compares the appearance of Mokuaweoweo on July 28, 1880 with its appearance in 1870. The name "Pohaku Hanalei" is applied to what we now call "South Pit," The lava fountains during the eruption of May 1, 1880, are stated by Brigham's guide to have been as high as the tops of the walls of South Pit.
