M. YR 1888 UL http://www.ajsonline.org/content/s3-36/211/35.abstract AB Alexander includes a map of Mauna Loa's summit, which shows Mokuaweoweo as a broad, central pit, with lunate platforms at both ends connected by gaps, the pits now called the "North and South Bays." Flows from the summit originate from the highest parts of Mokuaweoweo's rim, and the author questions how the lava is extruded without filling up and overflowing Mokuaweoweo. Additional material is repeated from Alexander (1886).
