Samples have been collected from the littoral cone, Puu o Mahana, about 2.5 miles northeast of Kalae, the southernmost point of the Island, and from a bed of ash on the southwest slope of Mauna Kea, 0.5 miles north of Kilohana Girl Scout Camp on the Saddle Road. Although the common association of silicified wood with siliceous volcanic ash is well known, the Hawaiian material is of special interest because it indicates that a much less siliceous tholeiitic basalt ash also serves as source of readily available silica."
