Abstract

A description, with a map and cross section, of Halemaumau on April 13, 1892. Halemaumau contained a flat lava floor 300 ft below its rim, in the center of which was an active lava lake 40 ft farther down. Bishop describes the action of the lake and notes that little sulfurous fume is associated with the active lake. He describes the 1891 collapse and refilling of Halemaumau.
